Amon of the 7th Army Air Force, inspects the tail boom of his Lockheed P-38, which was almost severed from the tail assembly when a Japanese 40-Millimeter anti-aircraft shell struck his Lightning fighter. With right rudder controls torn out and the boom barely hanging together, he flew the crippled plane 700 miles back to base.1945.
